{"id":18384,"date":"2025-12-08T00:00:14","date_gmt":"2025-12-07T23:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.athome.lu\/blog\/?p=18384"},"modified":"2026-01-07T10:34:30","modified_gmt":"2026-01-07T09:34:30","slug":"energy-renovation-challenging-preconceptions-to-drive-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.athome.lu\/blog\/en\/non-classe\/renovation-energetique-des-idees-recues-a-faire-evoluer\/","title":{"rendered":"Challenging misconceptions around energy retrofitting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Although Luxembourg residents consider renovating their homes to be a major driving force in the fight against climate change, such work is often hindered by common misconceptions\u2026 which need to be corrected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>For residents of Luxembourg, energy retrofitting is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.athome.lu\/blog\/en\/featured\/energy-renovation-a-priority-in-luxembourg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">major driving force in the fight against climate change<\/a>. This is revealed by the results of a European <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgl.lu\/en\/survey-energy-retrofitting?cid=en-jp-hs-noto25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">survey <\/a>conducted by the BNP Paribas Group, in collaboration with Toluna Harris Interactive, of 11,700 Europeans in eight countries, including 700 Luxembourg residents. The survey also indicates that there are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.athome.lu\/blog\/en\/featured\/energy-retrofitting-understanding-and-overcoming-the-obstacles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">certain issues <\/a>surrounding respondents\u2019 perceptions, including misconceptions that should be challenged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:11px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Misconception 1: only certified tradespeople may carry out retrofitting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>77% of Luxembourg respondents believe that using certified tradespeople to carry out energy retrofitting projects is a requirement. However, while certifications are a guarantee of quality, they are not mandatory. \u201cLuxembourg has a network of skilled tradespeople, both certified and otherwise. The important thing is to call on the opinion of a reliable partner who will execute the job well\u201d, says Marie Delhaye, Head of ESG Projects at BGL BNP Paribas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:11px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Misconception 2: it is better to buy a home that is already energy efficient<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>58% of respondents believe that it is better to purchase a property with a high energy rating than to invest in energy retrofitting. In reality, targeted measures \u2013 such as insulating attics, installing efficient heating systems, etc. \u2013 can already produce significant results. \u201cIf we were to wait until all the conditions are right for a comprehensive retrofitting project, we would never get anything done. Every action counts\u201d, emphasises Marie Delhaye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These misconceptions often hinder the implementation of energy retrofitting projects. Many households are reluctant to take the plunge, as the process appears too restrictive or costly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:11px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Challenging misconceptions and supporting action<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To encourage strong uptake of energy retrofitting, it is essential to correct these misconceptions. \u201cOur mission is to deconstruct the beliefs that hold people back and show that renovation can be done in stages, with appropriate support\u201d, says Marie Delhaye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:11px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tailored financing solutions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It is with this in mind that the bank promotes its dedicated financing solutions, as well as the expertise of its advisers and partners. Among the financing solutions available, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgl.lu\/en\/individuals\/renovation-project\/energy-retrofitting-subsidies.html?cid=en-jp-hs-clim25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">climate loan<\/a>, thanks to an interest subsidy from the Luxembourg government (subject to eligibility conditions), offers advantageous financing terms for renovations such as insulation, installation of an efficient heating system or solar panels, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a view to providing their clients with the best possible support, the bank\u2019s advisers have been trained in climate issues and in understanding energy performance certificates (EPCs).
