Bertrange, a community with a village character

The municipality of Bertrange, only a short distance from the capital, has nevertheless retained its village character. Composed of a single locality (Bertrange), the municipality forms a transitional space between the capital and the south of the country and can count on its many assets to make it a pleasant place to live.

A community that combines rural charm with a modern appearance, that is how one could describe the community of Bertrange. "One of the strengths of the municipality is its village character, we are a little bit in the countryside, as Claude Schroeder, head of the technical department, explains.

A rather active population

It is therefore not surprising that the local population has been growing more and more in recent years. Today, the municipality has 8,162 inhabitants. The population is 55% foreign and cosmopolitan, with almost 100 different nationalities, with the French, Portuguese, Italian, Belgian and German communities dominating. A proportionally young population compared to the national level, composed mainly of working people aged 35 to 55.

A flourishing economy

Only a few minutes from the capital, the municipality of Bertrange is considered to be prosperous thanks to the numerous companies established on its territory, another of its assets. According to the Statec, the municipality was home to 723 companies in 2016, of which more than 50% were service activities. In addition to the City Concorde and Cactus Belle Etoile shopping centres and the neighbouring shops, Bertrange also has the Bourmicht zoning area, as well as local shops. The City Concorde, which is currently being extended, should strengthen this offer thanks to its new signs and the installation of independent retailers. The cooperative Co-labor, which trains, qualifies and integrates unemployed people by working the land, has also chosen Bertrange to set up its new site in 2017. The municipality is also banking on the Horesca, with some fifteen restaurants spread around the locality.

Shared space and public transport

The municipality of Bertrange has an important public transport offer. Due to its proximity to Luxembourg City, the municipality is crossed by numerous bus lines of the AVL and RGTR networks to and from the capital. It also has the Bertrange-Strassen railway station, which is used by trains from the Belgian border.

In order to offer its citizens soft mobility, the municipality provides them with BE Bike electrically assisted bicycles. Three years ago, the municipality set up a shared space in the centre of Bertrange to ease traffic. Cars, buses, bicycles and pedestrians live together and move at a moderate pace. Here, there are no markings or traffic signs, all users are equal. Safety and responsibility are the key words. This zone, which includes homes, shops, leisure activities and administration, could be extended in the future. Bertrange is a pioneer in the country in this respect.

The efforts of the municipality to offer its inhabitants efficient mobility seem to be bearing fruit. Unfortunately, like all municipalities close to the capital, Bertrange is crossed by many roads, which results in heavy traffic.

Many services

In terms of infrastructure and services for the population, the municipality of Bertrange is not left behind. The "Atert campus", which consists of several buildings, caters for pre-school, early childhood and primary school children. The municipality also has several crèches, the ArcA music school with a multi-purpose stage...

There is also a large range of sports facilities. In the centre of Bertrange, the Atert sports and cultural centre has a festival hall, a large foyer, a training pool and a sports hall. There are also numerous sports clubs for young and old. The aquatic centre "Les Thermes", managed by an inter-municipal syndicate of the municipalities of Bertrange and Strassen, reinforces the already well-provided leisure activities. In fact, some fifty associations of all kinds liven up the calendar of local events.

Diversified housing

Real estate in Bertrange

The residential areas of the municipality have developed along a north-south axis. A large number of housing estates have sprung up here. While the housing is rather disparate to the north, it is particularly compact to the south of the town centre. There are also two residences for senior citizens. The municipality also owns a nursing home.

Projects galore

In order to continue to offer its ever-growing number of inhabitants quality infrastructures and services while expanding its housing offer, Bertrange is multiplying municipal and private projects. New housing estates should thus be built. The Allées Vertes housing estate on the route de Longwy will accommodate 250 homes. Near the route d'Arlon, the KBL site will house 160 homes. Finally, two phases of work will allow the construction of approximately 460 housing units in the Pourpelt district.

In terms of infrastructure, an additional residential complex for the elderly will soon be built. A new sports hall and a new halfway house will also be built after the demolition of the existing multipurpose hall... It is also planned that the local clubs will be able to use a social centre near the "Duerfhaus" after renovation work. ".
