The most famous haunted houses

Five of the world's most famous haunted houses give us a chilling look. Would you dare to cross the threshold? We don't think so!
Amityville (USA)
In 1974, this colonial-style house in Suffolk was the scene of a terrible tragedy: after slaughtering his parents and siblings, a young man tried to justify himself by saying that he had been driven by the devil. A few years later, "supernatural events" drove the new owners out after 28 days of occupation. The Amityville mansion is certainly the most famous haunted house, thanks to the film of the same name. By the way, this charming house is currently for sale. Any takers?

Waverly Hills (USA)
It's not quite a house, but the former Waverly Hills Sanatorium in Louisville, Kentucky, is simply reputed to be the most haunted place in the world! In this institution for tuberculosis patients, the bodies of the deceased were, in the early 20th century, buried in the ground.e The sanatorium was closed in 1962 and has been the scene of apparitions, whispers, children's voices and other muffled noises ever since. Closed in 1962, the sanatorium has since been the scene of apparitions, whispers, children's voices and other muffled noises. One thing is clear: it can be visited!

Monte Cristo (Australia)
The ghosts of this house built in 1885 near Junee, Australia, are all over the place: the former mistress of the house, a maid, a baby... and even the (unfaithful) wife of a former Prime Minister. They are said to manifest themselves through apparitions, footsteps and the mutilation of cats.

L'enfant de Hem (France)
Closer to home, near Villeneuve-d'Ascq, a house in Hem was said to be haunted by a child, whose footsteps, laughter and tears could be heard. Several terrorised owners are said to have abandoned this 1930s villa, before it was occupied by an evangelical church, then destroyed by fire in 2014.

And even the White House!
Since President Truman declared it so, the US President's residence has been known as one of the most haunted places in America. The first occupants, Abigail Adams and Abraham Lincoln, for example, are said never to have really left the premises. Real ghosts or spirits of the country's founders? Many prominent Americans have claimed to feel presences.
