Making your home safe for young children

When children start to walk, it's time to explore the house. Here are a few tips to help your toddlers move around safely.
The right thing for parents to do
Everyone knows that accidents in the home happen so quickly! Making the house safe when your child starts to walk, and therefore has a certain amount of freedom, is an imperative. Before investing in various types of protection, you must first think about adapting your behaviour as a parent: baby must never be left alone in the bath or in a high place, and you must also learn to tidy up differently, i.e. to put certain objects out of your child's reach (lighters, office equipment, plastic bags, batteries, etc.). Adopting the right gestures also means not letting the tail of the saucepan hang over the gas cooker, not leaving anything lying around on the stairs, etc.
Prohibited areas
Speaking of stairs, if there is one piece of equipment that is essential, it is the barrier that will prevent your child from tumbling down. The staircase should be a "no-go zone", just like the kitchen. In the kitchen, any dangerous products (such as cleaning products) should be placed high up. Also make sure that your toddler has no way of climbing, which he could do very quickly. This is why other precautions should be taken, especially with regard to windows: no furniture should be placed in front of them and it is advisable to install safety catches that prevent them from opening completely.
Essential equipment
Safety equipment is indeed a necessary investment. Among the essentials are socket covers, suction cups for the bottom of the bathtub and door locks. Other accessories such as protective corners or mini-alarms are options left to the parents' discretion. The easiest way to do this is to walk around the house in the baby's shoes and try to spot the dangers. However, you should not assume that there is no such thing as zero risk: the child can always find a way to hurt himself. The main thing is that it is benign and, after all, this is also part of his learning process.
