Beggen, a green lung for the capital

On the northern edge of the capital, the Beggen district enjoys an ideal location. With its islands of greenery and the Alzette running through it, Beggen is a haven of peace, to the point of attracting more and more new residents looking for peace and quiet near the city centre. Several real estate projects are currently under development.

Surrounded by the districts of Dommeldange to the east, Eich to the south and Mühlenbach to the west, as well as by the municipalities of Walferdange and Bereldange to the north, Beggen is a relatively quiet and family-friendly district.

A cosmopolitan population

With 3,455 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2016), Beggen accounts for 3% of the population of Luxembourg City in an area of 4km2. There is a significant mix of 90 nationalities represented in the district. Although Luxembourgers make up about 30% of the residents, the majority of the population is of foreign origin. French, Portuguese, Italians, Belgians, Russians, Germans and Poles are the most strongly represented nationalities.

The population is rather young, mostly composed of families with children. In terms of housing, the district is mainly made up of residential streets with single-family houses.

Good links to the city centre

Beggen can count among its assets, very good connections with the city centre. Several bus lines serve the district every day, with a dozen stops. Beggen also has 10 parking spaces reserved for people with reduced mobility. Soft mobility has not been forgotten. Several cycle paths are used daily.

Its proximity to the centre and the Kirchberg district, however, leads to a significant increase in traffic on the main artery but also in the perpendicular residential streets. Although the district does not have its own railway station, it is crossed by the railway line linking the city centre to the stations of Dommeldange and Walferdange. Parallel to the main road and the Alzette, the railway divides the district into three individual zones.

A significant supply of infrastructure

In terms of infrastructure, Beggen has a lot to offer. The district has extensive leisure areas for culture and sport. Young and old alike can enjoy five playgrounds, a football field, tennis courts, a sports hall, a stadium and a cultural centre. This wide range of quality facilities meets almost every need.

In order to best respond to its growing population and the needs of families, Beggen has a comprehensive range of basic education. Several schools in the centre of the district cater for the children of the former. A school residence with an increased capacity completes the offer.

The main street, Rue de Beggen, is home to the various shops in the district and is a popular place to pass through. Beggen has its own shopping centre, Centre Espace, which has about fifteen shops.

Nature in the spotlight

Beggen also has many recreational areas and several green areas at the level of the Eecherfeld and Mount Dommeldange, which invite you to go for a walk or a bicycle ride on the footpaths and cycle paths. Green spaces along the Alzette reinforce the attractiveness of the district.

New developments completed or underway

To ensure the quality of life of its inhabitants, Beggen is developing new projects. Its wastewater treatment plant, on the border with the municipality of Walferdange, is a central point of the district. In 2012, the City of Luxembourg undertook the construction of a collector connecting it to the Bonnevoie wastewater treatment plant over a length of more than 6 kilometres. The aim of the project, which should be completed in 2019, is to collect wastewater from the other districts of the city in Beggen and thus relieve the existing sewers. The advantages are numerous, as this collector can also be used as a water retention basin or as an emergency basin in the event of a breakdown in the plant. A project voted on at the beginning of the year also provides for the installation of a treatment facility for the backwater from the sludge dewatering process.

Residence Beggen

In terms of housing, the Luxembourg-Beggen intergenerational residence "Doheem mateneen" with 25 flats was inaugurated in February 2017. This project, piloted by Caritas Luxembourg, allows elderly people with modest incomes to live together with students from the University of Luxembourg. The aim is to bring together these sometimes isolated categories of people. In exchange for a very low rent, the students help their elders with daily tasks. The residence is divided into spaces reserved for students and others for seniors because of their different lifestyles, complemented by common spaces.
Since March 2016, atHome Group and Caritas Luxembourg have been partners, with a common objective: to improve the housing and rehousing of the most vulnerable people. On 15 December 2016, 60 atHome employees took part in the renovation of the Beggen residence during a social and solidarity day, each with their own skills and good humour!

Finally, a communication centre for the deaf and hard of hearing should also be built, while the bridge over the Alzette will be replaced.
