Diekirch : Peaceful and family-oriented community

Diekirch is the capital of the municipality and canton of the same name and is made up of the municipalities of Bettendorf, Colmar-Berg, Ettelbruck, Erpeldange-sur-Sûre and Schieren. Diekirch is part of the Nordstad, an urban area and development centre in the north of the country.

A commune with a holiday feel

If you are looking for a peaceful environment for the whole family, but still have all the necessities of life, Diekirch is a good compromise.

Diekirch is situated on the banks of the river Sûre and offers its inhabitants a peaceful living environment. The beautiful nature of the municipality is only a few minutes away on foot. The green plateaus "Haardt", "Goldknapp", "Seitert" and "Herrenberg" which surround Diekirch, charm tourists and residents alike.

Nature lovers and sports enthusiasts alike can take advantage of the various activities offered by the commune. Kayaking down the river, fishing, cycling or walking will delight young and old. Diekirch also offers various cultural activities. There are several museums in the town: the Diekirch History Museum, the National Military History Museum, the National Conservatory of Historic Vehicles and the Diekrich Brewery History Museum.

Paddle sport enthusiasts will be delighted with all the activities available to them. Kayaking down the river is just one example. It is indeed possible to practice canoeing thanks to a station specially designed for the practice. A white water channel in the "Al Schwemm" area allows enthusiasts to practice their passion in complete safety. In addition to these various sports facilities, which attract both tourists and locals, the latter can also enjoy other infrastructures. Swimming pool, tennis and football fields, sports hall and stadium... one thing is certain, you will not be bored at the weekends in Diekirch.

In everyday life, Diekirch's residents enjoy the pedestrian zone, where the town's shops and cafés are located. The historic town centre and the large terrace where numerous concerts, games and folklore events are held in the summer are a delight for families and gourmets. There's nothing like enjoying a beer from the town of the same name.

Living in Diekirch

Nestled in the heart of a sublime natural setting, the commune also has state-of-the-art educational, sports and cultural facilities.

Historically, Diekirch was primarily known as a military town. Today, the municipality is still an important centre of state activity, but more in the administrative sector. In addition, many students come to Diekirch. The town has several secondary schools, including the Lycée Classique de Diekirch, the Nordstad-Lycée and the Lycée technique hôtelier Alexis-Heck, all of which are located in the town.

On the housing side, there are several projects underway in the municipality, including the former Diekirch military estate. Among the expected projects is that of the former military housing estate. It is planned that the latter will be redeveloped by the "Société nationale des habitations à bon marché" (SNHBM). This project began in 2021 with demolition work. The infrastructure work is expected to start in early 2024. This large-scale project will cover two hectares and will provide 185 flats.

Finally, in terms of transport, the railway station, located on the Diekirch-Ettelbruck line 10, provides easy access to the south of the country and the capital as well as to the north and Belgium.
