Moving house: how do I get connected to electricity and gas?

Have you just arrived in Luxembourg? Do you already live here but will be moving soon? When you move into a new home, whether it's a flat or a house, there are a number of things you need to do, especially with your energy suppliers.

A connection to electricity and gas as soon as you move in

Unlike in France and Belgium, for example, when you move into a home in Luxembourg, it is already connected to electricity and gas. This supply is provided by a default energy supplier, which is designated by the Institut Luxembourgeois de Régulation (ILR).

This procedure is relatively practical as it allows you to benefit from electricity and gas in your home as soon as you arrive. It also saves you from having to deal with additional administrative procedures during your move, which is usually a busy time.

Gas and electricity supply yes, but temporary and expensive

However, this default connection to electricity and/or gas also has two major drawbacks.

First of all, this is a temporary solution: it is only valid for the first six months of your move. After this period, you will be obliged to take out a contract with the supplier of your choice, otherwise you will no longer be supplied with energy and you will have to pay the costs associated with the cut-off.

This default contract is also always more expensive (more than 10% extra) than a contractual tariff. In addition, from the third month of supply onwards, a monthly charge of €10, known as the "time default charge", is added to the default tariff.

Choosing a supplier quickly after your move

For these reasons, it is advisable to contact the supplier of your choice as soon as possible to conclude a new contract.

With Enovos as an electricity and/or gas supplier:

  • You ensure that you have a package that meets your needs
  • You get a cheaper contract than the default supply
  • You avoid unnecessary costs related to default fees
  • Your electricity is 100% green and your gas is climate neutral.

How to choose an energy supplier in Luxembourg?

There are four main scenarios.

You are moving to Luxembourg for the first time

If you are an expatriate or have just left home and moved into your first flat, you will need to conclude a contract with the energy supplier in Luxembourg in order to avoid being supplied by a default supplier.
If you wish to subscribe to EnovosYou can do this by filling in the "Become a customer" form on the website www.enovos.lu

Enovos will then take care of all the necessary steps, which will automatically end your default supply. The procedure takes between 2 and 8 days, but you will not experience any disconnection as a result of the change of supplier.

You live in Luxembourg, you are moving and you do not wish to change supplier.

You need to notify your current supplier of your change of address.

For example, if you are already a customer EnovosIf you wish to change your address, you can do so via your customer area on my.enovos.lu.

Please make sure to mention your old address and the desired end date of the connection as well as your new address and the desired start date of the connection.

Since the deployment of smart meters, the date is indeed essential in order to determine the meter reading when you move, which will be communicated to the Distribution Network Operator in question.

You are moving house and would like to change supplier.

You live in Luxembourg, but you will soon be moving and would like to take advantage of this to change energy supplier. You must terminate your contract with your current distributor and then take out a new subscription with the supplier of your choice. If you want to become an Enovos customer, you can fill in the form "Become a customer"via the website.

You wish to cancel your contract with your supplier following a move

Are you moving abroad or to Luxembourg and would like to cancel your contract with your current supplier? Fill in the natural gas supply contract cancellation form or the electricity supply contract cancellation form depending on your situation. Whether you are the former resident or the new tenant, we suggest that you have both parties complete and sign this form to document the succession of the energy supply.
