Clervaux: between history, nature and modernity

Clervaux is a region particularly well known for its tourist appeal, but it also has many assets for its residents. Its rich past, its preserved environment and its infrastructure make it a good place to live.

View of Clervaux

Nestled in the heart of the Luxembourg Ardennes, in a region also known as the "Oesling" and located in the north of the Grand Duchy, the municipality of Clervaux brings together, since its merger with the municipalities of Heinerscheid and Munshausen in 2011, 17 localities as well as various hamlets, farms and isolated mills. In the north-east, it forms a border with Belgium, while in the east, the river Our forms the natural border with Germany.

The second largest municipality in terms of area (85.6 km2) just behind her neighbour WincrangeHowever, Clervaux is not densely populated. Clervaux, the seat of the municipality, Marnach, Heinerscheid and Eselborn are the most important localities of the entity. The municipality is sparsely populated, with 5,262 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2007).er July 2018), of which almost 34 % are non-Luxembourg residents. In all, 78 different nationalities live here: Portuguese, Belgian, Dutch, French and German are among the most represented. A tourist town par excellence, Clervaux also sees its population increase regularly during weekends and school holidays.

A picturesque community

Clervaux Castle

Clervaux is attractive in more ways than one. The medieval castle of the small town is without doubt the best known monument of the municipality, of which it is the emblem. Dating from 1129, it bears witness to the power of the former counts. Today, it houses various attractions: the Museum of Model Castles of Luxembourg, the Museum of the Battle of the Bulge and the exceptional photographic collection "The Family of Man" by Edward Steichen, which is listed in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register. The municipal administration is also located in one of the wings of the castle. Other tourist attractions in the municipality include the Benedictine Abbey of St. Maurice in Clervaux, which overlooks the valley, and the Robbesscheier Ecomuseum and Leisure Centre in Munshausen.

Clervaux is a green municipality located in the heart of the Our Natural Park and is home to numerous hiking trails to be explored on foot, horseback, bicycle or mountain bike. The region offers enchanting landscapes, extraordinary views of the wooded valleys of the Clerve and the rocky plateaus that make it up.

Enhanced mobility

Although Clervaux is a rural commune, it is also resolutely modern. It is supported by major roads, which link it to Diekirch, Ettelbruck and Luxembourg to the south, to Wemperhardt to the north, to Vianden and Echternach to the east. Since 2015, work on the creation of a 3.7-kilometre-long cross-city link has also been underway. By 2022, it should facilitate access to the Eselborn-Lentzweiler industrial zone and thus relieve traffic congestion on the N18 national road, mainly in the Clervaux and Marnach crossings.

As far as public transport is concerned, Clervaux is crossed by the Luxembourg-Ettelbruck-Troisvierges-Gouvy-Liège railway line n°10. The Clervaux station and the Drauffelt stop are located in the area, allowing residents and tourists to travel easily throughout the country and even to Belgium. Ettelbruck can be reached in half an hour and the centre of Luxembourg in one hour. The mobility offer is completed by 24 bus lines that serve more than 50 stops in the municipality.

More accessible housing

Real estate Clervaux

Thanks to its geographical position, relatively far from the capital and the country's main economic area, Clervaux is also an attractive municipality in terms of housing. While a flat that has already been built costs more than 5,000 euros per square metre on average in the Grand Duchy, it sells for "only" 3,661 euros per square metre in Clervaux. A price that remains high compared to other countries, but which is affordable for Luxembourg.

Business, education and leisure

Clervaux also has all the infrastructure necessary for daily life. There are numerous shops, hotels and restaurants in the municipality. The brand new Nordstrooss Shopping Mile in Marnach, which opened last year, has around 30 local shops. A medical centre is also planned for next year.

Located in Reuler, the basic school accommodates some 500 children in about 30 classes. It includes all cycles (pre-school, primary). On the same campus, there is also a sports hall, a football pitch, a halfway house, a crèche, a media library and a multi-purpose hall. The start of the 2018 school year also marks the opening of the doors of the brand new Clervaux high school, which includes an Edward Steichen accredited European school, which is public and open to all.

The music school offers lessons in music theory and various instruments. Many sports can also be practised in the municipality: running, cycling, football, basketball, fishing or even golf in the heart of one of the most beautiful courses in the Greater Region. The municipal swimming pool is also accessible all year round and is complemented by the heated open-air swimming pool of the Camping de Clervaux, which is open during the summer season.

Clervaux is not to be outdone in terms of culture either. Throughout the year, the regional cultural centre "Cube 521" in Marnach offers a varied programme of theatre, classical music, jazz, dance, cabaret and drama. In Clervaux, young and old alike can find something to enjoy.
