Anti-burglary tips for a peaceful holiday

Leaving your home unoccupied for one or more weeks can attract burglars. Rest assured, there are simple ways to protect your home and leave in complete peace of mind: our anti-burglary tips.

Fear of burglary

Summer is coming, and with it the time for holidays. You are probably getting ready to take your family to your summer destination and leave your house behind. And not without fear: what if burglars had the bad idea of taking advantage of your absence to visit your home and steal your most precious possessions? Without a good lock (but of course you have installed one) and protected openings, it would only take them a minute. Don't panic! There are simple and inexpensive ways to protect your home.

You are absent... without really being absent

It is important not to think that burglars act randomly. On the contrary, they find the place where they are going to break in and make sure that the occupants are not there. The first anti-burglary tip is therefore simply to make it look as if you have not left. You can, for example, ask your neighbours to regularly come and open the shutters (and water the plants) and empty the letterbox - which is often a green light for thieves. If your neighbours are not willing, invest in a presence simulator that activates lights or other equipment at specific times and for a set period of time. It will cost you around €20, so it would be a shame to go without one!

Have your home monitored

Another deterrent is the surveillance of your home by the Grand Duchy's police. Simply fill out a request for a surveillance service at your police station or online to benefit from patrols. You can also install an alarm system linked to a specialised centre, with cameras visible from the outside or hidden if you are one of those who think that visible equipment will make intruders think you have valuable property. If you don't have the budget, there is still the option of dummy cameras, available for around 30 euros. Finally, for fans of new technologies, innovations to prevent burglary (home automation, biometrics) could be of interest to you!

What about home exchange?

Speaking of budget, here's one last anti-burglary tip that's both economical and secure: home exchange! As we said, the best way to avoid burglaries is not to leave your house empty. By finding a family willing to visit Luxembourg and leaving their home in the South of France or elsewhere, you save money on your holiday rental while not abandoning your home.
