Moving: discover your new neighbourhood!
Moving house can be a very unsettling experienceThis is especially true if you are far away from your relatives and the old neighbourhood where you used to live.
The only way to cope with this change is to throw yourself in head first and make the effort to really discover your new neighbourhood. The goal is to really feel comfortable in your new "life".
But how do you go about discovering your new neighbourhood? Follow our advice:
Beating the pavement
There's no better way to discover a new neighbourhood than to put on your trainers and hit the pavement. Take a stroll through the streets to discover the architecture, the narrow streets and alleys, and even the riverside walks.
Do it on a Saturday to get a real neighbourhood feel. Also try cycling if you can, you'll cover more distance that way.
Ask your neighbours
When you see your neighbours, take the opportunity to ask them for advice. They will probably be only too happy to tell you about their favourite restaurant or grocery store. Word of mouth recommendations are always the best, so don't be shy and ask!
Pay attention to posters
How many times have you walked without looking at the billboards or walls that are covered with posters? Keep your eyes open and pay attention to the advertisements in your city. You might find the perfect pilates class around the corner, or a film festival in the local cinema.
Ask your estate agent
Knowing the area is also part of their skill set, so ask them for more information. Some real estate agents may even live locally, or at least spend a large percentage of their time in the areas they represent.
Think about the essentials
Find the nearest hospital, doctor, police station, vet and pharmacy on call. There is something reassuring and comfortable about knowing where to go if you need emergency medical attention, or for any other problem.
Use the Internet
Check forums, local blogs, social networks, local news sites, to find as much information and advice as possible. Interact on the Internet with other people living in the same area or city as you.
...And you'll soon feel at home in your new neighbourhood!
