Decorating as a tenant

Decorating a flat when you are a tenant is not always easy. However, you live there and sometimes you stay there long enough to want to transform it into a space that suits you. So how do you know what you can do or change?
It is the lease that will determine your scope of action. When you sign the lease, ask your landlord if there are any restrictions.
The possible arrangements
If you are not allowed to paint in colour, use white. Synonymous with light and simplicity, white is an ideal backdrop to enhance a refined décor. Better still, it comes in a multitude of shades: pure, cream or tinted.
Alternatively, opt for fabrics: hang them as a decorative panel to cover an entire wall.
Another possibility: stickers. Self-adhesive, easy to apply and remove, they can be used on walls, doors or furniture. The countless patterns and colours allow them to be arranged in a thousand ways to give the effect of wallpaper.
An open shelf can be used to divide a room between the dining room and the living room. By placing objects on it, you create both a point of interest and add colour to the room. A grouping of green plants can also serve as a divider and give an exotic look, while a screen will create more privacy.
If the floors are not suitable, use rugs. Patterned or plain on carpets, parquet or tiled floors, they come in all sizes and materials and can be adapted to the room.
For windows, curtains are preferable to blinds. The latter have precise measurements, which you may not be able to use again when you move. Curtains are easier to adapt, and can be adjusted to any size. They can also be used to decorate doors and shelves and add colour.
