Moving or renovating?

Does your home no longer suit your lifestyle? Have the little ones grown up or is the decor no longer up to date? Do you simply need a change? You have two options: move or renovate. Before making a decision, here are a few things to clarify your thoughts.

The home: an emotional bond

Your first child took his or her first steps here and the neighbours are nice. The house is an anchor point, we have a special relationship with it, full of memories and accomplished projects. It is both a cocoon and a refuge, it shelters our life and the emotional bond we feel with it is often very strong.

Your wish list

This is the first step to take before making a decision. Is it a new way of life (professional change, personal project, evolution of the family composition) that will dictate the future choice of a move or a renovation? More accessible public transport or a reputable school are sufficient reasons to consider another home. A kitchen that is too small, a wall that is a little faded or a lack of space are all reasons to think more carefully about whether to change the place or to leave.

Why renovate your house?

Lack of space, a need to bring the house up to date or to comply with current standards (heating, electricity) are strong arguments for planning a renovation. The advantage? Even though the work may disrupt daily life for a while, you don't have to move from your home! Yes, but is it worth it? It all depends on how you view the idea. A brand new bathroom or a more functional kitchen will improve your life while adding value to the house in case of resale. Calculate! Once you have thought through the changes to be made, your priority will be to calculate the cost of the work as accurately as possible. On the other hand, it is preferable to keep your current home if you are enjoying it at an attractive price (monthly loan payment, rent, etc.), and you doubt that you will be able to find such advantageous conditions elsewhere.

Good reasons to move

If the scale of the work envisaged requires many months to complete and involves a temporary move, this will inevitably increase the costs. Never forget that even a major renovation will never solve everything. If you are longing for a large garden, a huge living room or two extra bedrooms, you will have no choice but to pack your boxes! You will have to think about selling the house and looking for a new property.

Saying goodbye to your neighbours or living through a chaotic period of work, it is up to you to weigh up the pros and cons both emotionally and financially to make the best decision.
