Moving: 5 tips to prepare for the big day

Moving into a new house or flat is always a special event.

Here are five things you can do in advance to ensure a successful move!

1- Pack smart

Remember to label your boxes and cartons with the destination room, this will make unpacking much easier.
If you are very organised, you can list what is in each box. After a long day of moving, you'll be glad you did.

2- Connect and disconnect your services

One of the tasks on your list is to inform your suppliers that you are moving. Make sure you have water, gas and electricity before you move in, and at the same time 'disconnect' your current home.
Your move can also be a good time to find a new supplier by comparing offers from different companies.

3- Insure your new home

Have you changed your insurance policy to cover your new home?

The first thing is to make sure that your policy covers your move. Even with professional moversIn some cases, damage may occur (ask your removal company what their own insurance covers).
Finally, consider checking that your new home is covered when you move in, and that your current home is still covered until you leave.

4- Change your address and redirect the mail

Our advice is to do this as soon as possible, you may be surprised at how many people need to know your new address. Think of the school, the bank, your employer... the list is long. Make a list of all the people you need to inform and let them know as you go along.

Making your address changes with the various organisations can sometimes be insufficient, there are always a few bills or other letters that will not find their way to your new address. Think of the post office's redirection service to recover anything you have forgotten.

5- Arrange childcare in advance

When moving with children, it is best not to involve them on the day. Ask friends or grandparents to look after them for the day, which will make things easier and less stressful for everyone.

And one last tip - make sure that important documents (birth and marriage certificates, passports, etc.) are kept together in a safe place.
