How to create a vertical garden?

After the success of plants to be hung vertically on the wall, the vertical garden is becoming a must in our gardens. Simple to create, the only limit is your imagination.

Ready-made solutions for vertical gardens

Creating a vertical gardenIf you have a green thumb, but DIY is not your cup of tea, garden centres offer ready-to-install kits to quickly create a vertical garden on your balcony. These are generally wooden or steel panels, coloured or natural, which are usually fixed to the partition between two balconies. Often used as a privacy screen, this system has pots that you can move around as you wish. All you have to do is plant plants in them: herbs, flowers, hanging plants, etc. Another trendy product that we like for its minimalist spirit: the planting bag to hang on the wall. Made of resistant canvas, it is composed of several pockets designed to hold your soil and plants.

Create your own vertical garden with your own hands

If you are not afraid of DIY, you can design a custom-made hanging garden yourself by following these steps:

1. Protect your wall A protective layer is usually placed between the wall or partition and the vertical garden. This can be plastic sheeting, hessian, or felt-like material.

2. Build your support If you don't want to make holes in your wall, a simple way to install a support is to plant it in a planter filled with soil.

3. Choose your plants The most important thing to remember is that you should not overpower the plants underneath them: dare to use a mixture of colours, gradations or aromatic herbs. If you choose slightly drooping plants, make sure that they do not spread out too much on the plants that occupy the space under them. Choose plants that require regular watering. If you really want a plant that is more comfortable in an arid environment, give it a high spot, so that it does not get wet when you water your other plants. Ideally, to avoid this type of problem and stains on your support, you should install an irrigation system that allows water to pass from pot to pot.

The hanging garden is one of the major trends in garden centres. Comparable to a plant painting, it seduces the most creative among us and brings colour to a rather sad wall.
