Three ways to heat in an environmentally friendly way

Do you want to protect the environment and reduce your carbon footprint by switching to environmentally friendly heating? Here are three solutions you can implement.

The wood stove

Using an inexhaustible source of energy, the wood stove can be used as the main heating system or as a back-up heating system, depending on its power and efficiency. It is much more efficient than a fireplace as it heats by radiation and convection at the same time. There are two types of fuel for a wood stove: logs or pellets (some manufacturers now combine the two). A pellet stove is generally more efficient and has a greater range, but requires electricity to operate.

Solar heating

Solar panels on the roof

Although it requires an investment of around €3,500 (the price of a collector) for 35 m², once the installation is complete you will never - or hardly ever - pay to heat your home again. By installing photovoltaic solar panels on your roof and suitable radiators, or even underfloor heating, you are opting for the most ecological solution. However, there is a disadvantage: by definition, it needs... sun. It is therefore necessary to provide additional heating because solar energy does not cover 100 % of your needs.

The heat pump

The heat pump works on the principle of extracting energy from the air or the ground to heat the house through heat emitters. There are several types: air-to-water and air-to-air heat pumps, which can be adapted to existing electric heating systems. The most efficient solution, however, is the geothermal heat pump, but it requires the installation of collectors and is rather heavy work. It is therefore recommended in the context of house construction.
