How to renovate green?

Have you decided to give your home a new lease on life while protecting the planet? Here are the basics of an ecological renovation.

Think insulation first

A more environmentally friendly house means first of all a house that consumes less energy. If you undertake to renovate your home, you must first think about insulation; the planet and your bank account will thank you. Attic insulation, interior insulation, exterior insulation... several solutions exist. It is therefore recommended, if you have not already done so, that you carry out an energy audit and, if necessary, launch the necessary work. This may involve changing your joinery and installing double-glazed windows.

Non-polluting materials

Green renovation means using materials that are not only environmentally friendly, but also locally produced. Let's just say that the carbon footprint is also measured by the number of kilometres travelled to get them to your home! For this reason, traditional materials have been making a comeback in recent years. These include straw, wood (from local, sustainably managed forests) and clay bricks. As far as insulation is concerned, you can opt for materials such as wood or cellulose wool, hemp, cork, etc.

What about the paintings?

Chances are that renovating your home will involve renovating the interior design, and therefore the partitions. Whether they are old or newly built, you will probably paint them. Here again, you can do so without harming the planet, since certified organic paints are now available in all DIY stores. In concrete terms, they contain very few agents from the petrochemical industry, but rather components of vegetable and mineral origin. You can find this type of paint for the interior of the house, but also for the façade and exterior joinery.

Anticipate your consumption

Of course, you are going to live in this house, and therefore consume water and electricity. As part of an ecological renovation, you should therefore think about this and install systems that consume less. Opt for solar panels if you want a simple solution for electricity production, and install a rainwater harvesting system.
