Financial aid for your renovation work

When buying a new home or improving the comfort of their home, many people consider renovating their home.

Yes, but before taking the plunge, you need to Draw up a good budget by asking for quotes and finding out about the financial aid offered by the Luxembourg government.

Direct financial aid

In Luxembourg, an "improvement premium" can be obtained to finance the renovation of a house. This is a direct capital grant. This premium is granted for certain work carried out to improve the habitability, health and safety conditions of your home (existing home).

Who is eligible for the premium?

The improvement premium is actually a share of the cost of the work undertaken. It is granted under certain conditions, notably according to your income, your family situation and the type of housing targeted by the renovation.

To benefit from this aid you must be legally entitled to reside in Luxembourg and own the property. You must also live there, as the property must be your main and permanent residence. Furthermore, you must not be the owner or usufructuary of another dwelling, either in Luxembourg or abroad.

For which works?

The work must be carried out in buildings where the first occupancy was less than 15 years ago. You do not have to be the first occupant.

However, if existing rooms are extended or new rooms are created, the age of the building is no longer relevant. At this point, only the criteria of useful living space must be respected. For a single-family house, the surface area must not exceed 140 m² and for a flat, 120 m².

The works eligible for this aid are now as follows:

  • roofing, framing or zinc plating
  • drying out damp walls
  • the creation of a crawl space or equivalent insulation
  • connection to the sewer or wastewater disposal system
  • the provision of bathrooms and toilets, including the septic tank
  • laying water, gas and electricity pipes
  • installation and renewal of central heating
  • installation and replacement of shutters
  • the addition or extension of living quarters
  • the restoration of facades using a traditional process
  • remediation of houses with a high exposure to radon (radioactive gas)

Please note that routine maintenance or embellishment work is not eligible.

What is the amount of this aid?

The improvement premium corresponds to the maximum 30 % of the invoice amount for the renovation works.

Its amount may not exceed the total sum of 10,000 euros per beneficiary. In the event of the sale of the home, this premium does not have to be repaid.

We have only presented the improvement premium here, but the Luxembourg government also offers indirect aid for renovation, i.e. the deduction of interest and other costs associated with renovating a building that is not yet occupied, and the reimbursement of VAT or the direct application of the super-reduced rate. In addition, there are specific direct aids, such as financial aid for energy advice or for special facilities for the disabled.
