My first steps as a gardener

Would you like to get more involved in gardening but have little knowledge of the subject? We have the best tips for beginners. Whether it's a window box or a garden, it's never too late to learn to garden.

Apprentice gardener, where to start?

Would you like to learn how to grow vegetables? Start in a vegetable patch or in a few square metres in the ground. Choose to plant a few herbs and 2 or 3 different vegetables to start. Choose varieties that go well together and are known to be easy to grow: lettuce, radish, courgette, beans, strawberries, herbs such as basil, coriander or chives...

Would you rather invest in creating a landscape garden? In that case, start by maintaining the existing plants. Then plant flowers or small shrubs, always bearing in mind that garden maintenance requires time. Again, take it easy and observe how the plants behave.
Important: before planting, choose your location carefully. It should preferably be sunny or semi-shaded, away from a wall or low wall and easily accessible.

What tools should you use when you start gardening?

There is no need to invest in big equipment when learning to garden. However, a few tools that are essential for discovering the joys of gardening are :

- A watering can
- A garden hose
- A spade
- A rake
- A claw
- Pruning shears
- Fertiliser
- Potting soil
- Tutors

Add pots, planters, straw, etc. to this list, depending on the type of planting you are planning.

When and how to plant?

Generally, planting takes place from April to September, depending on the type of plant or vegetable, and outside the hot season. The most common planting method is as follows:

1. Prepare your land by aerating the soil well
2. Water the soil generously
3. Create a hole or groove
4. Plant your seedling or sow your seeds
5. Cover with soil and potting mix
6. Water regularly
7. Add fertilizer

Gardening is attracting more and more city dwellers. Garden centres now offer tools and equipment specially designed for balcony gardening and new gardeners. You can grow herbs, plants or vegetables in planters, pots or in a vertical vegetable garden.
