Finding a rental in Luxembourg when you have a pet

It's not easy to find rental accommodation in Luxembourg if you have a pet! Here, the landlord may refuse to rent you his property simply because you have a dog or a cat.

So how do you find a place to rent when you have a pet?

Priority should be given to looking for 'pet-friendly' accommodation

Some landlords accept tenants with pets...but you have to find them.

Look first for ads that contain a notification about this. To make your search on atHome easier, we have created a filter "Animals accepted"..

You can of course try your luck with landlords who are reluctant to have a pet in their flat. You will have a better chance of convincing them if your pet is small, clean and does not cause damage.

Some landlords will accept this provided that the co-ownership regulations allow animals in the building.

Pets: how to convince an owner?

It is advisable to prepare your application well before you start your rental search.

  • Before meeting the landlords, take the time to gather a few documents that will reassure them: the European passport, proof that your pet's vaccinations are up to date...
  • If your companion is a dog, it must be registered in your municipality of residence.
  • You must also pay an annual fee.
  • Also consider finding insurance that covers your animals in a flat

If you are leaving a tenancy, you can ask your landlord to write a letter stating that your pet has not caused any damage to the flat or any nuisance in the condominium. If you are already in possession of the inventory of fixtures at the end of your tenancy, this can be used to your advantage.

In any case, the tenant must not hide the existence of his pet from his landlord. The landlord could legally break the lease contract if he or she were to find out. This is, of course, provided that the words "animals not allowed" are included in the lease and in the co-ownership regulations.
