How to find the perfect flatmate

Is your house too big and you want to share it with a flatmate? Or is sharing a house a way of life that you have chosen to adopt? But there's one important step: finding the right person to share your kitchen and bathroom. Here are some tips on how to do it right.

First track: relatives

Naturally, when you think of a flat share, a few friends and family members who might be willing to move in immediately come to mind. After all, choosing someone whose character and lifestyle you already know, and who by definition is close to you, is a natural solution. If no one in your circle is looking for a place to live or is simply interested in the principle of sharing a house, you can extend your search to friends of friends. Did you know that three out of four tenants are people who are more or less close to each other? That said, a little caution is in order: just because you're currently having a great time with this or that friend doesn't mean you'll get along well on a daily basis. Think about it because it can even ruin a relationship!

Set your criteria

Of course, this possibility does not work every time. In this case, you must look for a stranger. Do not do this search randomly. Take the time beforehand to write down the criteria that are important to you. These include the age range of your ideal flatmate, his or her lifestyle (there's no point in talking to an inveterate partygoer if you get up at 4am every morning), his or her professional and family situation, his or her interests... This doesn't mean that you have to stick to your list. This does not mean that you have to stick strictly to your list, because you will inevitably meet several people before moving in. This is when you can really choosing your roommate.

Meet your flatmate

And here comes the moment. The moment when you come face to face with prospective flatmates. In this respect, you should prefer a neutral place, such as a café, rather than your flat. You will be able to see how the person behaves 'socially' and the meeting will not feel (too) like a job interview. Is the person you are talking to comfortable in their shoes? Does he/she behave naturally? Do you have the impression that he/she answers your questions frankly? Are they silent or do they talk too much? The answers to these questions will give you valuable information.

But above all, how do you feel about this person? Relaxed, at ease... or not? Finding the right roommate is also - and perhaps primarily - a question of feeling. For you, and for the other person.
