Furniture: the ingredients for your autumn decor

Rustic or contemporary, design or vintage, they set the tone and add soul to your rooms. They are your furniture!

One thing is certain, there is something for everyone. From the most classic to the most modern, from the most functional to the most aesthetic, the furniture surfs the different trends and adapts to the times. And it is not unusual to mix genres!

While choosing furniture is mostly a matter of taste, as in fashion, there are great waves of styles that come and go. Let's take a look at the trends for this autumn 2017.

Podcast Radio Basics - Episode 26

Listen to these tips in the Lifestyle section of atHome on L'essentiel Radio:

The materials: the choice of nobility and naturalness

The first observation is that noble materials are being given pride of place, and quality furniture that lasts over time is making a strong comeback.
Precious woods, such as walnut or mango, are very popular. They will give warmth to your interior and bring character to your room.
The other element that is making a comeback is marble. It comes in shades of white, grey and especially black, which is particularly appreciated for its elegant look.

Natural fibres and all organic materials are a second trend this year. First of all, cork is the material that is now being used in furniture: stools, side tables, etc. It is a must-have!
Or the rattan that comes out of our grandmothers' attics to take pride of place in our living rooms. Not forgetting wicker...in short, a return to nature, and to the past.

Warming colours and fabrics

Furnishing fabrics, like the materials used to make them, should be natural. In particular, choose woollens and linen, materials that will bring softness and well-being to your home.
At the same time, richer coverings such as leather and velvet are making a comeback. For your sofa, brown leather is a must. As for silky velvets, they will also dress your sofa, but also your headboard or your chairs.

In autumn, reds, oranges and browns are the colours of the season. Nothing really new, these are timeless! However, if you want something new, intense and dark colours are also very trendy. A dark green for example will warm up your room and create a more intimate atmosphere. Just like a deep navy blue, which is both classic and distinguished.

Focus on the Scandinavian vintage style

The Scandinavian decoration as we know it today was born in the 1930s under the influence of the modernist movement. It is characterised by its functional aspect and its refined aestheticism. Over time, this style has evolved and has come back in force in the 21st century. Today, there is a return to the golden age of Nordic decoration, and the success of vintage Scandinavian. This style combines all the new trends in one!

In keeping with Nordic decor, raw and natural materials are greatly favoured. Solid wood furniture is ideal. And for textiles, linen, cotton or fake fur dress up the furniture, because natural materials are essential for a Scandinavian atmosphere. As for colour shades, Finnish or Danish inspiration offers us a rich palette offered by nature: grass green, ice blue, light pink, etc.

To conclude, we summarize the recipe one last time:

For your autumn furniture, you will need :
- a good dose of raw or precious wood
- a generous spoonful of ecological and natural materials
- all sprinkled with warm, deep colours

Have a nice autumn!
