How to survive in a shared flat?

Due to a lack of funds and very expensive rents, it is sometimes necessary to turn to shared accommodation in order to find a suitable home. Although convivial, living with others is not always easy. Here are some tips on how to get the best out of sharing a flat.

Same rights and duties

The basic principle in a harmonious flat share is that everyone should do their bit, and to create a good organisation in the flat. This includes payment of rent, contribution to costs, but also everything related to daily tasks in the common areas. It is easiest to make the rules clear from the start, even if it means drawing up a roommate charter and a schedule for cleaning, shopping and other duties.

Organise fridge and cupboards

You love meat, but two of your flatmates are vegetarians. This is one of the central issues of sharing a flat: food! Meals are often a shared experience. This does not mean that everyone eats the same thing. By organising the fridge(s) and cupboards according to levels, with a system of sealed boxes or labels, in short as you like, you will avoid conflicts and always find your last yoghurt!

Establishing rituals

In a shared flat, and even if each person has a different rhythm of life from the others, moments of sharing are essential. They allow you to relax, to get to know the people living under the same roof and sometimes to put things on the table. Friday night drinks, afternoon pastries or a chat room, it's up to you to come up with rituals that are sure to strengthen the bonds.

Saying rather than guessing

Of course, not every day you are at 100 % of your form. There are probably times when you just want to isolate yourself. While you don't have to vent about your problems, it's always better to let your roommates know that you're not doing so well, rather than letting them wonder what's going on with you and get the wrong idea. Remember, they are not in your head!

Respect above all

Sharing is a source of personal enrichment. Above all, it is based on respect. Whether it is the cleanliness of the common areas or noise, remember that you are never alone and invite your flatmates to do the same. If you have a problem, speak frankly and directly to the person concerned, while remaining polite and respectful, of course.
