In Redange, a balance is sought between housing and crops

With its exceptional natural setting and property prices that have not yet reached record levels, the commune of Redange is attracting many new inhabitants. Construction projects are therefore following one another, while trying to preserve the cultivated area that supports the 30 farmers in the commune.

The Attert valley is a rather bucolic setting that is well known to walkers in the region. Day-trippers also flock here, both for its nature and for the enormous aquatic complex in Redange, which has just benefited from a new investment of three million euros. This municipality in the heart of the valley does not only attract holidaymakers. The population has been growing steadily for the past thirty years. "Our seven villages now have a population of about 2900says Yves Gerekens, mayor of the municipality. Among this population, 860 people are foreign residents. More than 60 nationalities are present in Redange and a Red Cross hostel also accommodates about 40 asylum seekers.

An administrative and sports centre

It must be said that Redange, the administrative seat of the canton of the same name, has many assets to attract new inhabitants, particularly families. On its territory, there is a halfway house with a capacity of 220 places, a primary school as well as a high school with 1200 pupils. As far as health is concerned, there are also important services in the commune, such as a medical centre with a dozen doctors, as well as a pharmacy. "In addition, a large number of shops are still present in the communeYves Gerekens is delighted. Since it is an administrative centre, we can also count on the presence of the Post, the police, an office of the NSC, etc."

Redange is also home to 40 sports clubs, from handball and football to table tennis and swimming. In this respect, but also for the management of the home or the industrial estate, for example, the municipality works closely with the other municipalities that make up the canton of Redange. "For us, it is very important to work in synergy with the other municipalities in the canton, recalls the mayor. You can do things on a different scale when you work together. Proportionally, it's a bit like what's happening at the European level: small countries achieve greater things by working together with their neighbours.

300 more inhabitants in the short term

Real estate Redange

If the services available in the municipality are up to scratch, there must also be enough housing to accommodate people wishing to settle in Redange. "We are a "CDA" municipality - a centre of development and attraction - and as such our PAG can incorporate large building areasexplains Yves Gerekens. However, we also have to deal with the fact that there are still 30 farmers in the municipality, who need to keep plots of land under cultivation in order to continue working. However, several construction projects are underway and five PAPs have already been authorised. "Semi-detached houses and flats will be built, mainly in the villages. The aim is to accommodate 300 people in the short term. However, one of the PAPs that will be completed in the next few years will be able to house 500 people on its own.says Yves Gerekens.

The price of housing is not yet at its highest, but it is also prohibitive in Redange. The price of a plot of land purchased in the municipality amounts to €65,000. Solutions are being considered by the municipality to facilitate access to housing for all. "Eight building plots are available at a preferential price of €43,000 per acre. They are reserved for people with lower incomesemphasises the mayor. In addition, a social real estate agency is run by the canton and offers the possibility of finding a rental at a lower price.

Redevelopment of the park

Other projects that are about to be completed in Redange include a relief road, which should be finished in 2025. In addition, a municipal workshop with a category 3 fire station will be built in a few months. "It was built at the expense of the state, with a total budget of 12 million eurossays Yves Gerekens. It will offer a better service to all the inhabitants of the municipality. In addition, the two-hectare park in the centre of Redange will be completely redeveloped, as will the Worré house, the headquarters of the inter-communal union of the canton of Redange. "New paths will be designed, the lights will be renewed and a kiosk will be installed. ", says the mayor.

In order to guarantee the attractiveness of the municipality, the presence of various mobility solutions in the municipality is also imperative. In this respect, Redange cannot count on a railway station, but the municipality does have a bus station with fairly frequent service, particularly to Luxembourg City (one bus per hour). As a rural municipality, Redange also has a dense network of cycle paths. These are used by both locals and tourists. "Since the system of Regional Tourist Offices has been in place, the signposting of cycle routes is much better and it is easier for tourists to get the information they need. We are trying to improve the infrastructure to welcome them, for example by offering more rooms, restaurants, etc. But this is being built up gradually. But it's being built up bit by bit.concludes Yves Gerekens.
