Mamer, to live and work in

A cosmopolitan municipality not far from the capital, Mamer is attractive because of its quality of life. The town's ambition is now to increase its population.

"The municipality of Mamer currently has 8,600 inhabitants, of which 47% are non-Luxembourgers. In other words, no one has any integration problems here", says Gilles Roth, the mayor of Mamer. And you only have to look at the table available on the municipality's website, which details the nationalities present, to see that nearly 80 different nationalities live side by side. While the French, Portuguese and Belgians are, unsurprisingly, very numerous, there are also many Danes, Italians and British. The multicultural and international dimension of the municipality is also reflected in the European School Luxembourg II in Mamer/Bertrange. Opened in October 2012, this site can accommodate 420 pupils in nursery, 1,050 in primary and 1,600 in secondary. Other schools and extracurricular structures complete the educational offer. At present, the "Kinneksbond" school campus, which combines modern school buildings with a halfway house, a cultural centre, a sports hall, multi-sports fields and playgrounds adapted to the different age levels, has 750 pupils on one site.

Growing population

The investments in the school infrastructure, which were decided about ten years ago by the local council, are certainly not for nothing in the attractiveness of the commune. Mamer also has the advantage of offering a pleasant and peaceful living environment, while being very close to the capital, which is easy to reach by bus or train. If car traffic makes the journey longer during rush hour, it's a matter of half an hour, not much more. All this has not escaped the notice of households. By way of comparison, Mamer had 3,139 inhabitants in 1970 and 6,745 in 2000. Since 2005, the annual population growth rate has ranged from 0.12% (2006) to 4.01% (2013).

Taking care of the reception of companies

Mamer is also a pleasant place to live and work. Close to the motorway junction but also accessible via the Arlon road and the Kehlen road, the Capellen Park has already attracted many companies. "In particular, we welcome companies active in the new information and communication technologies (ICT), which has earned us the nickname of Luxembourg's Silicon Valley," explains the mayor. New companies are also in the process of setting up on other sites. Still on the subject of economic and commercial activity, construction work on the future economic activity zone of the western region began in mid-September on the Grass site.

Finally, it should be noted that the inhabitants of Mamer like to travel by bicycle. This is because the town lends itself to it, but also because since 2007, the municipality has set up a self-service bicycle park for local residents. This is worth noting because the municipality has an ambitious environmental policy (public buildings and public lighting are powered by green energy, for example). The cycling champion Nicolas Frantz, who won two Tour de France races (in 1927 and 1928), was born in the commune. In another discipline, Josy Barthel, the gold medallist at the Helsinki Olympic Games in the 1500 m, is also from the town.
