Wincrange, preserving its uniqueness

A rural community par excellence, Wincrange offers its inhabitants a pleasant and peaceful environment, while having all the facilities necessary for daily life.

Located in the north-west of the country, near Troisvierges, Clervaux and Wiltz, the municipality of Wincrange stretches along the Belgian border. It was formed in 1978 from the merger of four former entities - Asselborn, Boevange, Hachiville and Oberwampach - and now comprises 27 localities. With an area of 113.4 km2Wincrange is the largest municipality in Luxembourg but, on the other hand, has one of the lowest populations and demographic densities in the country (4227 inhabitants according to the latest STATEC figures). And while many Grand-Ducal municipalities are characterised by a cosmopolitan population, Wincrange is home to almost 80 % of Luxembourg residents. All these elements make it a relatively atypical municipality on a national scale.

Grouped facilities for greater convenience

Wincrange has made this singularity an asset and the commune is careful to preserve it as best it can. Here, there is no question of building to excess in order to multiply the number of housing units and facilities available. " Our ambition is not to increase our population massively, explains the mayor, Marcel Thommes. We simply want to keep our identity, while adapting to the necessary changes, in order to continue to offer our inhabitants a high quality of life. "

A quality of life that is reflected in a number of ways. Starting with efficient and practical facilities, designed to simplify the daily life of the residents of the municipality. In this respect, Wincrange, as the main town, has a crèche, a halfway house, pre-schools and primary schools as well as a sports and cultural hall. A medical centre with two general practitioners, a physiotherapist, a chiropodist and a pharmacy has also recently been opened on the same road. " In the context of reform of municipal finances, this centralisation of equipment not only facilitates access but also optimises costs so that we can always offer better services to our residents "The mayor emphasises. The municipality is currently finalising studies and projects concerning the redevelopment of its school centre, in order to provide an ideal environment for the 400 children who attend it every day.

An ideal community for families

Living in Wincrange

With more than 37 % of households consisting of a couple with child(ren) according to the latest STATEC census (30 % nationally), Wincrange is a commune that attracts families. They find the peace and quiet they are looking for, while benefiting from all the amenities necessary for family life.

Although there are only a few local shops and petrol stations in the municipality, it is ideally situated in the middle of the commercial triangle formed by Schmiede, Pommerloch and Marnach. Various bus routes connect Wincrange to other towns in the north of the country. " We also want to develop new public routes from the various villages to better serve Wincrange, the nerve centre of the municipality "says Marcel Thommes. Other solutions have been put in place for more occasional needs. These include the Bummelbus, which is provided by the Job Forum, the Night Rider, which is used to get around the community on weekend evenings, the Late Night Bus, which enables young people to go to various dances in the region and return home safely, and the Adapto system, which offers its services to the elderly and disabled.

Wincrange is a lively town with a rich associative life - 70 associations are located there. Various sports can be practised here: swimming, football, table tennis, volleyball, gymnastics, judo, etc. We are also home to a regional dance school, with over 200 students. And as a member of the École de musique du Canton de Clervaux, we offer music lessons in Boevange. "The mayor adds.

A breathtaking living environment

Wincrange is an ideal place for lovers of nature and green spaces, nestled in the heart of a superbly preserved natural environment. Numerous hiking trails cross the meadow valleys of the municipality, where there is still a great deal of agricultural activity. This sector employs a large proportion of the population (more than 15 % according to the latest statistics, whereas farmers only make up 2 % of the active population in the Grand Duchy).

Involved in the Climate Pact and a member of ORTAL (Office Régional du Tourisme des Ardennes Luxembourgeoises), the municipality is committed to preserving this environment. For a little over a year, a highly efficient wind farm, which produces the equivalent of the energy consumption of 13,000 households, has been installed on the Weiler plateau.

In addition to its exceptional nature, Wincrange has several tourist attractions. As the mayor says, " since 2017, the Park Sënnesräich in Lullange offers its visitors a fun and educational experience based on the five human senses ". Among the places to be discovered are the old mill in Asselborn, which now houses a hotel-restaurant, the remains of the Meuse-Moselle canal in Hoffelt, the old postal road linking Asselborn to Bourcy in Belgium, etc. The municipality also plans to redevelop the site of a former slate quarry in Asselborn in order to open it to the public "adds Marcel Thommes.

A thoughtful design

It is therefore clear that although the municipality does not want to build a lot, it is still dynamic. " The general development plan, which is currently being finalised, provides for various construction projects, the development of new neighbourhoods or the rehabilitation of old buildings, but always taking care to preserve the homogeneity of our villages and to be in keeping with our environment and the infrastructures available to us "says Marcel Thommes.

Unlike other municipalities in the country, Wincrange does not seem to be affected too much by the real estate pressure. Flats and houses are sold at a lower price than the national average. This means that you can enjoy a more attractively priced home, while at the same time benefiting from the many advantages of this municipality.
