Ettelbruck, a town full of assets

Located in the centre of the Grand Duchy, Ettelbruck is an attractive town in many respects. Sport, culture, employment, mobility... The town offers its residents resources in many areas.

Ettelbruck Town Hall

Ettelbruck is the most populous municipality in the canton of Diekirch, with 8,824 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2009).er January 2017) in its 15 km territory2This is the area of Ettelbruck, consisting of the town of Ettelbruck, the locality of Warken and the hamlet of Grentzingen. In this municipality, where almost 80 nationalities live side by side - mainly Luxembourgers (51%) and Portuguese (27%) - the population is growing steadily and relatively significantly. " In the last 15 years we have seen an increase of over 1,000 inhabitantssays Jean-Paul Schaaf, mayor of Ettelbruck. And we believe that this population will continue to grow, as is happening all over the country. "

To accompany this population growth, the municipality has set up large-scale urban and real estate projects. In the next five to ten years, 453 new housing units will be built. " We aim to develop homes of varying sizes, ensuring that each home has sufficient space. We want to offer our residents a sustainable, quality home. With this in mind, single-family homes are favoured where the land permits. They represent 159 homes out of the 453 planned "says the mayor. As for the station area, it will house around a hundred additional homes.

A strategic position

The redevelopment of the Ettelbruck railway station is one of the municipality's flagship projects. In addition to the creation of new housing units, an entire urban planning concept is being developed. The whole of the railway station - the second in the country in terms of passengers - and its surroundings are being redesigned in order to harmoniously combine soft mobility, cars, buses and trains, ensuring the best possible complementarity between these different modes of transport. Eventually, a P&R building with 430 parking spaces will be linked to the CFL station and the bus station. " Ettelbruck is centrally located. From the city, one can easily reach the south, the north, the east or the west of the country. It is therefore the daily destination of a large number of people who pass through this communication hubexplains Jean-Paul Schaaf. This is the context for the redesign of the station area. "The opening of the Northern Motorway in September 2015 has made it easier to travel to and from Ettelbruck and has made it more attractive to workers and day-trippers who are keen on shopping.

Since the 17th centuryème Ettelbruck has a strong commercial tradition. Thanks to its 280 shops, especially in the pedestrian zone of the town, but also to the highly developed medical and educational sectors, the municipality offers many employment opportunities. For example, " 24% of the municipality's employed population work in Ettelbruck itself, 16% in the Nordstad area, 40% in Luxembourg City or the surrounding area "says the mayor.

Top-notch equipment

Ettelbruck is an important town in the north of the country and has a good infrastructure. Every day, day care centres, day care homes and halfway houses take care of many of the town's children. It also attracts more than 3,000 pupils to the four secondary schools, the Centre for Continuing Professional Education (CNFPC) and the Centre for Differentiated Education located in the town. Some 800 pupils attend the basic school. However, as with housing, the demand for facilities is gradually being felt. A new halfway house for 500 children is due to be built in January 2018. At the same time, the basic school will be renovated and expanded.

Ettelbruck buildings

Ettelbruck is also attractive from a cultural point of view. The Conservatoire de Musique du Nord, created with the municipality of Diekirch, provides music and instrumental courses, dance, speech arts and singing to 1,453 pupils in the region. It is the second establishment of its kind on a national scale, after Luxembourg City. The Centre des Arts Pluriels d'Ettelbruck (CAPE) organises around one hundred cultural and artistic events each year, thus actively participating in the daily life of the municipality.

Finally, thanks to its 22 clubs and its state-of-the-art infrastructure, Ettelbruck offers a wide range of sporting activities: football, athletics, badminton, basketball, climbing, gymnastics, judo, squash, tennis, table tennis, archery, etc. A skatepark, a model airplane field, a petanque track and playgrounds complete the range of sporting activities. " We also invested in the aquatic centre "Nordpool"In the case of Colmar-Berg, as in other neighbouring municipalities "adds Jean-Paul Schaaf.

Developing the Northern Region

Because beyond its municipal territory, Ettelbruck, as a member of the Nordstad, is strongly involved in the development of its region. " Nordstad is a cooperation that is gaining in speed and attractiveness "says the mayor. Among the platform's major projects is the creation of the Fridhaff industrial zone, which is currently being finalised. It should soon bring together 42 sectors of activity. At the same time, the entire urban axis between Ettelbruck and Diekirch will be reviewed, both from the point of view of transport and services. All these initiatives should be an additional asset for the municipality and the whole of the north of the Grand Duchy. " Despite a smaller population, we offer our inhabitants a comprehensive range of services in all areas, comparable to what exists in the south of the country. It is therefore an opportunity but also a challenge to do everything possible to preserve this attraction "concludes Jean-Paul Schaaf.
