Grevenmacher, both modern and authentic

In the east of the country, on the German border, Grevenmacher is a town steeped in history but resolutely looking to the future.

Grevenmacher is located on the Moselle River, some 20 kilometres between Luxembourg and Trier. It offers a pleasant living environment. On an area of 16.5 km2 including 650 hectares of forest and 57 hectares of vineyards, the city has 4,895 inhabitants (August 2016) from 79 different countries. Almost 60% of the residents are Luxembourgers, while just over 40% are non-Luxembourgers. At the end of the 1980s, the population of Grevenmacher increased significantly following the opening of the A1 motorway linking Luxembourg City to the German border.

The metropolis of the Luxembourg Moselle

Grevenmacher is the economic hub of the eastern region of Luxembourg and has a rich commercial activity. Numerous specialised companies as well as large industrial groups have chosen to set up in the town's industrial zone, at the place known as "Potaschberg". In the near future, the area will be expanded to include the financial sector. A number of German banks are interested in locating here. The city thus offers numerous employment opportunities, whether within the city, to the capital or to nearby Germany. Mobility is also designed with this in mind: the capital and Germany are quickly accessible via the motorway. Every day, 15,000 border residents cross the bridge between Grevenmacher and Wellen on the other side of the border. Buses also run regularly to Luxembourg City. And to make transport even easier, a "Park & Ride" will soon be built by the Luxembourg government at the end of the town.

A commercial, cultural and sports centre

Another advantage is that Grevenmacher has all the shops and administrations necessary for everyday life. There are a number of large retailers and several local shops. The pedestrian zone, which is ideal for strolling and will soon be equipped with Wi-Fi, is home to a number of restaurants and small shops. The schools are not neglected either, with the presence of a pre-school, primary school and a secondary school. The care home will be expanded to accommodate 72 additional children.
In terms of culture, Grevenmacher has a library, a cinema, a café-theatre, a music school with 600 students, and museums. And in terms of leisure, the town offers its inhabitants and tourists numerous facilities: a sports complex, a heated outdoor swimming pool, the famous butterfly garden, playgrounds, a skate park, petanque, tennis and football pitches, etc.

A warm and friendly atmosphere

Although Grevenmacher is undergoing significant economic and infrastructural development, the municipality has managed to preserve its village character. Thus, for many years, the emphasis has been placed on renovating the town centre and enhancing its heritage. A cultural trail and a historical circuit allow you to discover the history of the town through its remains of fortifications and its typical alleys. In addition to its rich past, Grevenmacher also enjoys an attractive environment. Famous for its vineyards, the town is home to two of the largest wine cellars in Moselle: Domaines Vinsmoselle and Caves Bernard-Massard. Also appreciated for its surrounding forests, the locality offers an extensive network of cycle paths as well as numerous walking and horse riding trails. Trips on the pleasure boat MS Princesse Marie-Astrid and a pleasant walk along the Moselle river complete the range of outdoor leisure activities.

Housing projects for everyone

The city has an agreement with the ministry to receive refugees or people on low incomes. In addition, there are several social housing projects coming up. The Housing Fund is planning to build a housing complex. The Société Nationale des Habitations à Bon Marché will also create a building complex and an underground car park with 200 spaces. In addition, a municipal project is planning the construction of a building with five flats and the renovation of three houses in the old town. Finally, a whole new area opposite the lock is being prepared, which will accommodate approximately 250 people.

Over the past thirty years, Grevenmacher has seen a significant increase in the price of its land, prices are now reaching €60,000 per hectare. With a price per square metre below the national average, thepurchase of houses and flats remains attractive. Nevertheless, there is little land available in this characteristic town, enclosed between the river and the vineyards. This is why, in order to preserve its identity and to allow everyone to live in a peaceful environment, Grevenmacher does not wish to expand beyond its 5,500 inhabitants.
