Living in Pétange: a town full of assets

With a prestigious industrial past, Pétange is the fifth largest city in the country in terms of population. Major investments have been made in recent years to improve the environment and quality of life. The town's population has increased by 20% in 10 years.

Located in the very south of the country, in the extreme western corner of the country, the municipality of Pétange has the particularity of bordering France, at the level of Mont-Saint-Martin, and Belgium. In addition to its main town, the municipality also includes two other towns: Rodange and Lamadelaine. Together, these entities have a population of 17,640 inhabitants, making it the fifth largest municipality in the country.

In the register of assets

Petange is an attractive municipality. Although real estate is more expensive than in neighbouring foreign municipalities, prices have not soared and remain competitive (compared to other Grand Ducal municipalities).
According to statistics based on the prices displayed in the real estate ads on www.atHome.lu, the average price to acquire an old flat in Pétange is €4,165 per m2. For an old house, the average price is €497,164 (as of February 2016).

The municipality also has the advantage of good public transport links to and from the capital. It takes about twenty minutes to get there by train. Pétange, which is still an industrial municipality, is also spoilt for choice in terms of its natural environment. The two worlds meet in the industrial and railway park of Fond-de-Gras, which attracts many tourists every year.

The attractiveness of the municipality is also and above all explained by the policy that is being pursued there (the mayor is Pierre Mellina), in favour of the quality of life. This is reflected in the many investments in children. In recent years, the municipality has promoted the creation of crèches, halfway houses, extensions and modernisations of existing schools in order to meet the needs of the 1,000 additional households welcomed since 2005. A major financial effort has also been made to enrich the municipal sports offer: sports centres, football pitches, swimming pools, etc. More than 70 associations are working to breathe more life into the whole area. In addition, there are about a hundred other associations that provide cultural, artistic and social activities.

A major housing project in Lamadelaine

In order to accommodate 3,000 more inhabitants over the last ten years, the municipality has also been careful to develop its housing offer. Various projects are underway in all three localities, even though the amount of building space has now melted away like snow in the sun. Last November, a large project entitled An den Atzéngen' has nevertheless been launched in Lamadelaine, where a new district is to be built. It is being developed in collaboration with the Société nationale de l'habitat bon marché (SNHBM). Nearly one hundred flats and single-family houses, some of which are reserved for social housing, are included in the programme. The land will be sold at very attractive prices, but the purchasers will have to respect architectural specifications and also undertake not to resell their property before 20 years, in order to avoid speculation.
