Lorentzweiler, a dynamic community

Situated only a few kilometres from the capital, the municipality of Lorentzweiler enjoys an ideal geographical position while offering its inhabitants peace and quiet. Its excellent public transport connections and numerous school facilities are among its main assets and make it a very popular place to live.

Composed of the localities of Lorentzweiler, Helmdange, Bofferdange, Blaschette/Asselscheuer and Hunsdof, the municipality has an area of 17.45 km2. Although small in size, it has a population of 4,000 in its entirety, with a population density of just over 200 inhabitants per square kilometre.

A growing population

Although it is not one of the most densely populated municipalities, Lorentzweiler's population is gradually increasing. " The population is increasing by about 100 people per year. It is made up of 61 % Luxembourgers and 39 % foreigners, the majority of whom are Portuguese. We have an increasing number of young people "Jos Roller, mayor for 30 years, explains. Its proximity to Luxembourg City and the Kirchberg plateau is not for nothing in this increase, since many of the commune's inhabitants work in the capital.

Real estate in Lorentzweiler

To meet its growing population and rising property prices, the municipality is banking on the creation of large mixed housing estates consisting mainly of flats. " We try to have a mix but we mainly build houses with flats. Many older people have sold their houses to come and live in flats. "

Enhanced mobility

Lorentzweiler has excellent connections to the capital, such as the number 10 train line from the north of the country to Luxembourg. " We are well connected. The station is next to the town hall "says the mayor. Several bus lines cross the municipality. " For example, we have the 290 bus line that connects Mersch to Luxembourg City. The Autoroute du Nord also passes close by "he continues. Like every community close to the capital, Lorentzweiler knows the other side of the coin Traffic is heavy and there is a lack of parking spaces "says Jos Roller.

After the construction of a bypass at the northern entrance to Lorentzweiler, the municipality is planning to redesign the main road with bicycle lanes and collective parking spaces. The municipality wants to make the traffic flow more smoothly. " The level crossing is a problem, especially during rush hour. School buses pass through it. We want to remove the level crossing and create an underpass from the roundabout by the end of the year "says the mayor.

Those who like soft mobility can also reach the city centre thanks to the Alzette cycle path which crosses the municipality, as well as paths such as the Alzette path and the Op Kuelent path.

Facilities for all ages

Lorentzweiler is a pleasant commune, close to the city, but which has retained its green setting. The municipality can count on the numerous quality infrastructures it has developed to guarantee the quality of life. " Many young households are moving to the municipality because we have good facilities, especially for children. All the buildings are on the same site. The basic school (early years, pre-school and primary) currently has 310 pupils and this will increase in the next few years "says Jos Roller. The Jos Wohlfart school complex also houses a halfway house, a day nursery, a sports hall and multi-sports fields.

Infrastructure in Lorentzweiler

The municipality also has a village hall, a cultural centre, a youth centre An der Sonn, football and tennis pitches and several multi-purpose rooms.

Lorentzweiler aims to provide entertainment and leisure activities for all age groups. The elderly are not forgotten. In the locality of Bofferdange, an old people's home welcomes the elderly of the municipality.

Many projects

The municipality has been keen to improve its infrastructure, starting with the town hall ten years ago but also more recently with a new drinking water reservoir in Blaschette allowing for increased water pressure and a guaranteed reserve. " Our ponds in Bofferdange, Lorentzweiler and Blaschette are connected to the SEBES "says the mayor. Lorentzweiler has also acquired a new sports hall, which was inaugurated in 2017. It includes a storage room, a sanitary block, a refreshment room and bleachers for 500 spectators. In the basement, the building houses four large and two smaller changing rooms with showers as well as two weight rooms and rooms for the school medical service. The teaching part of the building houses five classrooms and three intermediate rooms, one of which is used by the music school.

Lorentzweiler Town Hall

The mayor does not intend to stop there. " We are planning to expand the crèche and the halfway house with a second building for the latter. We also want to improve the sports facilities. We want to create a general concept for recreation with a playground and fitness area, a skateboard area. We will also create a new rehearsal room for our 75-piece brass band. The old school in Bofferdange had become too small "says Jos Roller.

The extension of the youth centre and the Uelzechtdall senior club is also planned to improve and diversify the offer. " The old butcher's shed will be demolished. A footbridge will link the two buildings "concludes the mayor.
