Schieren, a growing community

Schieren is located in the immediate vicinity of the Nordstrooss and has experienced a significant population growth in recent years. This is due to the fact that the municipality offers a modern infrastructure and a pleasant and relaxing environment.

Located between Ettelbrück and Colmar-Berg, the municipality of Schieren has 2,040 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2010).er August 2016), more than half of whom are Luxembourgers (58%). Other nationalities present in the territory include Portuguese (27%), followed to a lesser extent by Cape Verdeans, Italians and French.

A booming population

Like many other municipalities in the north of the country, Schieren attracts a large number of new residents. Close to the capital, but at the same time more peaceful, Schieren is a particularly popular location for families. The 30-35 year olds are the most represented age group. After several decades of relative stagnation, the municipality has seen a rapid and significant increase in its population since 2010. With a growth of 36% between 2011 and 2016, Schieren has welcomed almost 550 additional people in five years.

The reasons for this development are threefold. Firstly, an important special development plan, implemented in 2006, has created new housing and thus contributed to the increase in the number of inhabitants. Secondly, property prices are relatively attractive - compared to the areas around Luxembourg City or in the south of the country. For example, for a single-family house, land prices are around €50,000-55,000 per acre. Finally, the municipality is now particularly well served. The opening of the Nordstrooss, which bypasses the community, has brought Schieren closer to the capital. "The municipality is also well served by public transport.says Mayor André Schmit. "Schieren is one of the only municipalities in the Grand Duchy to have two railway stations on its territory. he explains. The stations of Schieren and Colmar-Berg (located at the place called "Colmar-Pont", which belongs to the municipality) make it possible to reach Ettelbrück and Luxembourg-City quite quickly.

À the search for land

This rapid and sudden increase in population raises some questions about real estate. "Today, it is becoming difficult to find land to build single-family houses". says the mayor. However, the "The new general development plan of the municipality considers the possibility of extending the building area, while at the same time not being too exposed to the nuisance of the Nordstrooss bypass.he adds. Several real estate projects are being studied to accompany this demographic development.

In order to provide a pleasant living environment for all, the municipality wishes to build affordable houses in collaboration with the Housing Fund: work should start at the end of the year. Another major project is the concept of 'managed housing'. This involves the creation of a residence with 60 flats for people aged 60 or over or for people with reduced mobility. The residence will offer its residents medical assistance and special care. The initiative also includes the creation of a grocery shop, which is currently lacking in Schieren.

An attractive municipality

Schieren aims to provide a welcoming residential environment for everyone. For this reason, the municipality set up a crèche and a halfway house near the primary school a few years ago. The municipality has a sports hall and several associations offering various activities: pétanque, basketball, tennis, football, gymnastics, dance, etc. In Colmar-Berg, residents can also take advantage of the Nordpool, a swimming pool that was co-financed by Schieren. A choir and music classes complete the entertainment offer.

Schieren also attaches great importance to the environment. Located in the Alzette valley, which flows into the Sûre a few kilometres away, the municipality is home to numerous forests, which are ideal for walks and other outdoor activities. Moreover, via the Climate Pact, the locality has set up two photovoltaic installations on its territory; a project in which the inhabitants were able to participate fully by acquiring shares in these civil companies.

Encouraging businesses

Schieren is a small community, but it has attracted a number of companies. For example, it has a commercial and industrial zone along the railway tracks. This area has some 700 employees, including the construction company SOLID.

Schieren is a member of the Nordstad and took over the chairmanship in September. One of the future projects is to allocate land to young start-ups. These companies are to be located in an area between Ettelbrück and Schieren. This will further strengthen the strengths of the municipality.
