Steinsel, peace and quiet at the gates of the capital

Located a few kilometres from Luxembourg City, Steinsel is nevertheless a rural and medium-sized town where life is good. It is concerned about the well-being of its inhabitants and is developing in a well thought-out manner.

Although it borders the capital, Steinsel appears peaceful and serene from the outset, far from the hustle and bustle of the city. Comprising three localities - Steinsel, Heisdorf and Mullendorf - the municipality is home to some 5,300 inhabitants over an area of almost 22 km2. The population density of the municipality is therefore moderately high compared to the figures recorded by some of the seven neighbouring municipalities, such as Luxembourg City, Walferdange or Kopstal. Over the last 15 years, the population of the municipality has grown in a measured way, increasing by about 50 people each year. " If there is still land to build on, if there is space available, our objective is not to attract as many people as possible and to build to excess This is not the case", says Jean-Pierre Klein, the mayor of Steinsel. On the contrary.

The municipality, which is currently modifying its General Development Plan setting out the main lines of development for the future, intends to preserve the harmonious setting of its entities and maintain a certain quality of life for its residents. Three main pillars have thus been determined. " They consist of preserving the rural character of the commune, not extending the perimeter of the agglomeration and reserving land for public use "explains the mayor. Among the flagship projects defended in this respect are the removal of the level crossing in Heisdorf and its replacement by an underground path in order to better guarantee the safety of all; the development of a recycling centre at the inter-communal level; and the renaturation of the bed of the Alzette, which crosses the municipality, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture.

Respectful projects

Steinsel takes care to protect its environment as best as possible. The municipality has more than 1,200 hectares of forest, more than half of its surface area, of which 363 belong to the municipality. These green areas offer many walking paths and are a real green lung. " We are fortunate to live in a rural community, yet close to the city. We must preserve this richness, which families, in particular, greatly appreciate "comments Jean-Pierre Klein.

The development of the centre of Steinsel, around the church square, is nearing completion. In the long term, this mixed district will house high quality housing and will extend the already available range of shops and service establishments necessary for everyday life. " Together with the Housing Fund, we will soon inaugurate a residence of 14 social housing units for tenants, while another 52 units are still under construction in Heisdorf "adds the mayor. A major housing project is to be developed at the entrance to Steinsel, on the edge of the lower street.

An ideal location, between Luxembourg and Mersch

Like all the municipalities surrounding the capital, land and houses in Steinsel are going for high prices. For example, the average selling price of an existing flat is €5,950 per square metre, and €4,808 for a house (statistics atHome.lu - April 2017). The proximity of Luxembourg City - only 8 km from Steinsel - largely explains this phenomenon. " The entire municipality is well connected to the centre of Luxembourg and to Kirchberg by public transport, which makes it easier for workers to get around "says Jean-Pierre Klein. It is also very easy to reach Mersch, which is also about ten kilometres away. The train, which links Luxembourg City to the north of the country, stops at Heisdorf. Finally, soft mobility is encouraged, thanks to the permanent development of pedestrian paths, cycle tracks and parking spaces facilitating carpooling, aiming to limit the use of private vehicles.

But if the municipality is close to the capital and is easily connected to it, it also offers many employment opportunities in its territory, thanks to the 300 or so companies that are located there, particularly in the industrial zone.

A community on the move

In terms of leisure activities, Steinsel is also well equipped. " The cultural life of our town is very lively, thanks to the many events organised - exhibitions, cabarets, theatres, etc. - which allow everyone to find something to enjoy. "says Jean-Pierre Klein. As a member of the PIDAL (Piscine Intercommunale de l'Alzette) located in Helmsange, less than three kilometres away, the municipality, in partnership with local associations, also offers a wide range of courses on its territory, whether in the artistic, linguistic or sports fields. " We have the best basketball team in Luxembourg, both men's and women's. Our football teams are also well positioned "The mayor proudly points out.

In order to further strengthen the entertainment offer, a second sports and cultural hall will soon be built in Heisdorf. The area will also include a new crèche and a halfway house, which will provide optimal care for the village's children and help parents to better reconcile family and professional life. The Heisdorf school campus already houses cycle 1 of the basic education system, while the Steinsel campus includes cycles 2 to 4 as well as a halfway house, a sports hall, a cultural hall and a day nursery. " The future of our children is essential. That is why we want to modernise the infrastructure dedicated to them, to ensure a lively and dynamic environment "This means new infrastructure, the construction of many playgrounds and the development of activities in the youth centre. This is reflected in the creation of new infrastructures, the construction of numerous playgrounds and the development of activities in the youth centre. " In the same way, we pay special attention to senior citizens, setting up specific activities for their leisure time and structures to encourage them to stay at home as much as possible "he concludes. In this way, Steinsel wants to ensure that everyone, young and old alike, is provided with a quality environment and guidance.
