Walferdange, between town and country

Situated just north of Luxembourg City, in the Alzette valley, Walferdange enjoys an ideal geographical position. Although small in size, it nevertheless offers many services as well as a wide range of sports and cultural activities. These are assets that are attracting an increasing number of inhabitants.

In addition to its main town, the municipality of Walferdange also includes two other localities: Bereldange and Helmsange. Together, these three entities have a population of 8,043 (figures as at 1 January 2010).er January 2016) on an area of just 7.06km2This makes Walferdange one of the most densely populated municipalities in the country. In recent years, Walferdange has seen its number of residents swell: +11% in five years, i.e. around 800 people. A cosmopolitan municipality par excellence, it attracts many expatriate workers.

The proximity of Luxembourg City and Mersch, two economic centres of the country, is one of Walferdange's great assets. The heart of Luxembourg, located about ten kilometres away, is easily accessible by car via the main road. "Since the opening of the Nordstrooss, road traffic has been relieved. The presence of trucks on the main road is now limited.explains Mayor Joëlle Elvinger.

The public transport connections are also ideal. By train, the journey to Luxembourg's central station takes just ten minutes. The same applies to buses. They run regularly to the capital and to Mersch. For the more sporty, it is also possible to reach Luxembourg city centre via the Alzette cycle path: a journey made all the easier since the installation of the Pfaffenthal lift.

Infrastructure for all

When it comes to services, Walferdange is not to be outdone! To support its growing population, Walferdange regularly invests in new facilities. It offers a wide range of services for children and teenagers, including crèches, infant consultations, a basic school (formerly pre-school and primary school) in each locality, two halfway houses, a "Woodstock" youth centre, etc. In addition, a third halfway house is currently being built in Helmsange to better meet the needs of resident families. So each locality will soon have its own facility.

At the same time, Walferdange has long been developing its sports infrastructure. Two ultra-equipped complexes offer practically all sports, from the most classic to the least common: football, basketball, volleyball, jogging, tennis, rugby, bodybuilding, martial arts, climbing, archery, cricket, etc. Ballet and gymnastics classes, adapted to all ages, are also offered. The PIDAL (Piscine Intercommunale de l'Alzette), located in Helmsange, offers a swimming pool, spa, sauna and other facilities related to well-being.

In addition to sport, the municipality also focuses on culture. Every year, it organises the Walfer Bicherdeeg (book days), one of the most important cultural events in the country. In addition, there are music and language courses as well as two choirs and a wind band. The Prince Henry Centre, which can accommodate up to 800 people, is also a cultural venue renowned for its quality performances, concerts and lectures. Finally, the art gallery regularly hosts exhibitions of all kinds. Currently under renovation, it will offer a larger space at the beginning of 2017.
