Thanks to the numerous urban projects initiated since the end of the steel industry era, Dudelange is now getting a new lease of life. In recent years, the city has seen a growing number of residents, particularly attracted by the abundant educational, cultural and sports facilities.

A municipality back on its feet

Located in the heart of the former Terres rouges mining basin, in the south of the country and on the French border, Dudelange has for several decades participated in the economic development of the country. As a major centre for iron ore mining and steelmaking, it has been home to thousands of workers in the metallurgical and steel industry.

At the end of the 1970s, when the decline of the steel industry in Luxembourg became evident, Dudelange had to rebuild itself. The municipal administration has been working on this task for several years.

Schools in every neighbourhood

In Dudelange, young and old alike benefit from quality infrastructures. Some 210 associations and numerous communal initiatives bring the commune to life on a daily basis.

The youngest children are taught in basic schools located close to where they live. Each neighbourhood has its own school building, in order to keep travel within the city as short as possible and to ensure a neighbourhood life. Secondary education is also provided in the state-run Nic-Biever High School. Outside of school hours, eight halfway houses are available for children. Two communal crèches are dedicated to toddlers: they can take care of 67 children from 3 months to 4 years old. The youth centre offers activities for adolescents aged 12 to 18 throughout the year.

For leisure activities, children can also go to the regional music school, which offers musical, instrumental and vocal training for adults and children. Dudelange also organises computer and language courses.

Senior citizens are not forgotten either, as various associations offer them a variety of activities: sports, creative workshops, walks, guided tours, theatres, etc.

Culture and sport on the programme

Dudelange is a dynamic cultural city with a regional public library, an exhibition centre and contemporary art centres. The cultural centre "op der schmelz" hosts events of all kinds and caters to a diverse public.

Sports enthusiasts are also well catered for thanks to the many recent facilities: swimming pool, handball hall, basketball hall, fitness room, climbing wall, multi-purpose hall, indoor athletics track and a dojo for martial arts.

The children are not left out. Each school also has its own gymnasium. Also, children will be happy to discover playgrounds spread throughout the city as well as an open-air swimming pool. Four stadiums dedicated to football, American football, baseball and athletics complete the sports infrastructure in the area.

Soft mobility encouraged

In order to offer its inhabitants mobility solutions adapted to their needs, Dudelange relies on a network of five bus lines that serve the entire city, as well as on interregional lines that reach Esch-sur-Alzette, Esch-Belval, Bettembourg or the Kirchberg. The four CLF stops in the municipality, which are directly connected to Bettembourg station, are also easy to reach by train across the country. From there, travellers can easily continue their journey to Luxembourg, Esch-sur-Alzette, Mersch and Ettelbruck.

Dudelange places great emphasis on soft mobility. For several years, the municipality has been working on a "shared space" project, the work on which began in 2015. This shared space project aims to make different modes of transport cohabit and to facilitate the movement of pedestrians and cyclists. Three phases of work have been planned with the aim of redeveloping the space.
